About J-2 Dependents

A J-1 exchange student or scholar may be accompanied by a spouse and/or child(ren) under the age of 21 under the J-2 dependent category. Please notify the International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSSO) if you wish to bring your spouse or child(ren) in this category. Their information will be added to your DS-2019, and they will also receive a DS-2019 as your dependent. Additional funding will also be required to demonstrate your ability to support your family while in the U.S.

While your dependent is in the U.S., they are eligible for certain benefits but are also subject to certain restrictions. Below are some of the general benefits and restrictions for those in J-2 色色啦.

  • Able to work in the U.S. with USCIS authorization as long as employment is not intended to financially support the J-1 participant. Please contact the ISSSO regarding the employment authorization application process.
  • May study full-time or part-time
  • May travel in and outside the U.S. while the J-1 participant is engaged in their program

  • The J-2 dependent may not remain in the U.S. if the J-1 participant is outside for the U.S. for a significant period of time
  • The J-2 dependent 色色啦 ends when the J-1 participant's 色色啦 ends
  • The J-2 dependent is subject to the 212(e) residency restriction, as well as 12- or 24-month bars if the J-1 participant is subject
  • J-2 dependent children age out of the J-2 色色啦 at age 21, and must either return home or apply for a change of 色色啦 to a different visa category
