Andrew Bramlett is well beyond his years, recalling history like a scholar who has long been in the field, longer than his lifetime. Some might say he鈥檚 prodigious. At 19 years old, the first-year history student at Kennesaw State University sits on the Kennesaw Historic Preservation Commission. A decade ago, though, he was appointed vice president of the Kennesaw Historical Society and served in this role until the group disbanded in 2023.

Imani Adenuga can鈥檛 recall the exact moment science grabbed her by the heart, but she has always been inquisitive in nature, seeking knowledge no matter the subject area. 鈥淚 always want to know the why,鈥 said Adenuga, who studies chemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics. 鈥淚 think that just goes with science鈥攆iguring out the why of things or what makes things happen.鈥 The First-Year Scholar dove into research immediately upon arrival at KSU last fall, landing in the lab of chemistry professor Daniela Tapu where she took on a project involving sustainable catalysts. It constituted a huge leap for a freshman, given that the project is grounded in organic chemistry, a critical class for chemistry majors that she hasn鈥檛 taken yet.

Growing up, Luke Gamage was often captivated by video games and found himself pondering his own future as a game designer. Now a student in Kennesaw State University鈥檚 College of Computing and Software Engineering, he鈥檚 turned a class project into a design studio with its first game set to launch on Steam in April.

Apart from managing a full class schedule and extracurricular activities, Lena Song is a changemaker. A double major in media and entertainment studies and graphic communications and a minor in Asian Studies, Song serves as the vice president of a registered student organization, is actively involved with the Korean Program, and recently completed the inaugural Metro Atlanta Changemakers Fellowship.

For the past year, a group of Kennesaw State University students have been synthesizing information from a multi-year study about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on female academics who are also mothers. Led by professor of public administration Jennifer Purcell, the First-Year Scholars project is titled 鈥淲omen@Work in Higher Education: Barriers and Opportunities for Current and Future Women Leaders,鈥 and involves undergraduates Hannah Anderson, Kyndall Moore, Ana Luisa De Almeida Santos Onofre, and graduate research assistant Morgan Grant.

As the first person in her family to attend college in the United States, Andrea Martinez Angulo has long been imbued with a tireless work ethic. It was instilled in her by her parents, who brought her to the U.S. from Jalisco, Mexico at 4 years old as her father pursued his career ambitions, and it continued as she was introduced to STEM as a student at Kennesaw Mountain High School. Today, she is well on her way to breaking new ground in robotics as a student in Kennesaw State University鈥檚 Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology.

Just a sophomore at Kennesaw State University, Aliyah Johnson is well on her way to becoming a leader in the community. She holds numerous student leadership roles while balancing the rigorous courseload in the Wellstar-Tom and Betty Phillips Elite Honors Nursing Scholars program. Her name can be found in the rosters of various registered student organizations, and her commitment to her studies has landed her five competitive scholarships.

It鈥檚 not every day that students get the opportunity to take a class with the two highest ranking administrators on campus. However, Kennesaw State University President Kathy S. Schwaig and Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Ivan Pulinkala are redefining what it means to be a university leader. This semester, they led HON2400, an Honors Discovery course called 鈥淐ultivating Leadership Skills,鈥 offering their expertise and wisdom to about two dozen students. Schwaig shared her personal leadership journey, and Pulinkala focused on the theoretical principles of leadership.
