Award Process

General Note: Award applicants should disclose information on grants or awards received for the research article they are applying for as part of the award. One article shall not be the recipient of multiple awards. The winners will have their research featured in the Coles Research Magazine.

 

Coles College Prize for FT-50 Journal Publication $1,000

This award will be given to those Coles College faculty (or faculty group) who publish in journals that are part of the Financial Times Top 50 List. This list is commonly used to rank research at top-tier Business Schools. These faculty (or faculty group) will receive an award of $1,000 for each publication in journals included on the FT 50 list. Only publications that have a final acceptance date of 2017 and later will be deemed eligible. Further, work that faculty completed while being affiliated with KSU will only be deemed eligible.

Faculty Community Engagement Award $1,500 

The award aims to recognize and reward community engagement accomplishments through research or service. Applicants should demonstrate by providing evidence how their scholarly work or service has significantly impacted an external organization or society/community that resulted in notable improvements for an organization or industry with respect to processes, products, or services. Please note that previous recipients of the Coles College Applied Research Award within the past five years are not eligible for this award.

Criteria:

  1. Faculty members may submit one community engagement accomplishment that demonstrates how they provided/created value through their research or service project to an external organization or society/community over the past five years (i.e. work completed between 2016 and 2021). To be given serious consideration for the Faculty Community Engagement Award, the applicant must demonstrate an exceptional level of community engagement. This relationship should positively promote the name and mission of the Coles College of Business. The effect of the faculty member鈥檚 contribution to the community needs to be evident through many non-paid activities (work done under the name of Coles College of Business, Pro-bono).
  2. Faculty are required to submit a nomination that addresses the following and is limited to two pages of double spaced, font size 12 with one-inch margins: (1) name of external organization/benefiting society or community, (2) period of service, (3) title of research/service project, and (4) significance of the research/service project focusing on how the external organization/society/community benefited. Supporting documentation for the award may include research paper/publication, documentation such as a report provided to the benefiting external organization, letters of appreciation, and any other appropriate supporting documentation.

Competitive Grant Award - $1,000

 This award is to recognize top-quality research completed by faculty to meet expectations of competitive grants received from esteemed organizations such as the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Homeland Security, professional organizations in a discipline such as The Institute of Internal Auditors, Institute of Management Accountants and so on.

Eligibility: Any Coles College full-time regular faculty member (lecturer, tenured or tenure-track).

Criteria:

  1. Faculty members may submit one research project that received successful funding from a competitive external grant over the past three years.
  2. Faculty are required to submit a narrative that addresses the following: (1) name of granting body, (2) date grant received, (3) title of research/project, and (4) significance of the research/project. Faculty may want to address the prestige of the granting body and the significant contributions made by the research project.

The submitted narrative is limited to a maximum of two pages, double-spaced, with 12- point font and one-inch margins.

Impact Publication Award $1,000 ($500) 

The Coles College Prize for Impact Publication is to acknowledge high quality research publications by Coles College of Business faculty that demonstrated a significant or potentially significant impact on organizations and/or professional or business practices. The award will consist of a cash prize as well as funds for support of the scholarship. The following describes the process and criteria for submission.

Award: $1,000 cash award and $500 in research support.

Coles College Distinguished Scholarship Award

Eligibility

Any full-time regular faculty member (lecturer, tenure-track, or tenured) with a minimum of 3 full and consecutive academic years at Coles College under contract as a regular faculty member at KSU prior to being nominated. Temporary faculty is not eligible and years under contract as a temporary faculty member do not count toward eligibility requirements.

  • Once a faculty member has received the distinguished scholarship award from Coles College, he or she will not be eligible for the same award from Coles College for five years.

Award Criteria

  • Consistent excellent performance as evidenced by the level of activity in and commitment to scholarship and/or creative activity; the quality of scholarship and/or creative activities; and the strength and depth of expertise.
  • Evidence of sustained leadership in the advancement of scholarship and/or creative activity that exhibits dissemination and adoption of one's scholarship and/or creative activity by others; mentoring other faculty and students; sharing expertise with others; and holding positions that recognize the nominee's scholarship and/or creative activity.
  • Impact and significance of scholarly and/or creative work as evidenced through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, performances, creative works, grants and contracts (i.e., the scholarship of discovery), citations by other professionals, and adoptions.

Award Process

  1. Applicants are to submit online a document that specifies how they qualify for the award. The submission must meet the following guidelines or it will be automatically rejected:
    • ALL Applicants are limited to two pages, one-sided.
    • Times New Roman, 12 point font
    • One inch margins at the top, bottom and sides
  1. Applications will be forwarded to the appropriate DEPARTMENT CHAIR for review and input.
  2. The COLES FACULTY COMMITTEE will evaluate the applications and submit their determinations to the DEAN for the final determination of winners.
  3. Award recipients will be announced by the DEAN.

Practitioner Paper Award $1,000 ($500) (New)

The Coles College Prize for Outstanding Practitioner Publication is to acknowledge recent high-quality research publications by Coles College of Business faculty in practitioner focused journals. A list of practitioner journals accepted for this award can be found here. The award will consist of a cash prize as well as funds for support of the scholarship.

Award: $1,000 cash award and $500 in research support.

Award Process

  1. Applicants should submit a copy of the published paper (when applicable) that the award application is based on.
  2. Applicants are to submit online a document that specifies how they qualify for the award. The submission must meet the following guidelines, or it will be automatically rejected:
    1. See award criteria for specific page lengths as they vary for each award.
    1. ALL Applicants are limited to 2-5 pages, single-sided
    2. Times New Roman, 12-point font
    3. One-inch margins at the top, bottom, and sides
    4. Double spacing
    5. DEADLINE: January 19, 2025
  3. Applications will be forwarded to the appropriate DEPARTMENT CHAIR/ DIRECTOR for review and input.
  4. Applications will then be submitted to the RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE (RDC) which will evaluate the applications.
  5. Award recipients will be announced by the RDC by February 17, 2025. If an award applicant does not receive this notification, he/she should assume that he/she did not win this year and is encouraged to consider applying again in the future.
